How to build a fire.

It is very important that you know how to build a fire. It could mean the difference between life or death.

First thing is to gather some dry tinder. Dry tinder is the most important tool to building a fire. Tinder should be material or matter that is very small a can be lite by a spark. If you think the tinder is to big it probably is. Tinder material examples are

  • Bark Shavings
  • Dried leaves
  • Rotten Wood or Stumps
  • Saw Dust
  • Dried Plants
  • Paper
  • Dried Weeds

After you gather some good tinder gather some small dry twigs. Once the tinder is going you only have a small amount of time to get some wood burning. That is why it is important to gather everything you need at once. When I say small twigs I mean about ½ the size of your pinky finger. Once you have 10 or so small twigs gather some sticks about the size of your index finger. The idea is to start out small and work your way up.

It is important to know the placement of wood for a good fire. A good method to use is the teepee. The idea is to have your tinder in the middle of small twigs loosely stacked so the fire has room for air. Once you have your teepee lite it is time to start adding the larger sticks and then some good dried hardwood. Hardwood burns longer then softwood. Although softwood can help get you fire going good. A few examples of hardwood is

  • Oak
  • Hickory
  • Chestnut
  • Maple
  • Walnut

Once you have your fire going try to split your wood. Spit wood burns better then round wood. When you are ready for bed be sure to bank your fire so it will keep coals overnight.

Some ideas on getting you tinder light is

  • Strike anywhere matches
  • Lighter. Even if the lighter doesn't have fluid you can use the sparks
  • Binocular lens
  • Eye Glasses. Can be used as magnifying glass
  • Bow. Take your shoe lace and make a small bow. Twist a stick into the string. Place one end of the stick onto some softwood and then place a small block of wood on top of the stick to hold. Then use a sawing motion to generate friction on on the softwood. This can take a while but it is how our ancestors done it.
